Hits and Misses at Campus ...
DC and crewA list of things that went wrong...
Forgot handle to fluid head. Battery pack on Yashika Super 8 got tempermental. Greg pinched palm on tripod. Heidi pinched thumb on tripod. Left video tape in truck.
... So it begins ...
More reassuringly, I find my surfing chops to be just where I left them. A selection of the day's tastiest embedded here.
Also burned two test rolls of Super 8 up on the bluff at Campus Point at high tide, testing film stocks, exposures, angles
After film ran out, we set up the HV30 and I got ready for a surf as the tide drained out. Heidi played with the telephoto, camera settings, etc.
Separate, but notable victory: Figured out how to get my Sony media converter box to work, and started transferring old VHS surf tapes to digital formats... This is huge. Managed to get "The Innermost Limits of Pure Fun" and "Five Summer Stories" onto the laptop. Suggit!
Lessons learned: With the telephoto, you can't pull back too far with the HV30 or you'll get vignetting around the edges. Heidi is a whiz on the aperture settings experimentation. You can't cross step to the nose without sufficient velocity. The tripod is a bad bitch who will hurt you. Heidi ought to be the one in front of the camera, success-of-project-wise. Campus Point sometimes empties completely when the class bell rings. Even Super 8 is an expensive medium. My arms are weaker even than I had figured. Santa Barbara has kind, forgiving rights.
