Spat Out in Glory has had about three false starts getting more footage since the return from Nicaragua's golden surf spots. Finally it came together this week. Time, waves (of a sort), functioning camera equipment. At Devereaux. Where it all started back in '81. (Video after the jump.)
The Spat project keeps evolving. From a tactical shoot n' scoot surf-film expedition to Nicaragua into a long-term documentary. A multi-media, multi-decade, multi-location waveriding epic. Eliminating deadlines cultivates a relaxed surfing style. Witness the calm, beatific expression in the adjacent image. Just FLOWIN' with it...
Which brings us to the subject of waveriding. Witness the embedded video below. The editor mercifully cut out most of the initial attempts, wherein Spat paddles madly into waves that pass him by with utter indifference. Conditions were classic average Dev: A little west windswell pushing around the point on a dropping big tide. ONE, count 'em, ONE other guy out the whole time. Slumping slow waves crumbling over on themselves at the point. Every third set or so, a peeler that connects from the point break to the inside. Check the last ride to witness one of Spat's longest glides to date.
Style analysis: Casual surfing redefined, or flashing back to an alimentary emergency?
The stoke is back. Sending in a test roll of Super 8 for development here any day. We'll see how the Beaulieu has been doing in these long months of disuse.
In November, another shot at surf film immortality: three days at Refoofio (Refugio to those with any regard for the language, but whatevs ... ). Barrels there? About as rare a species at Refoof as at Devereaux. But it could happen. A howling Santa Ana, a little southern energy. Who knows? There on that little inside pocket east of the point... on a dropping tide ... with perfect light ... and functioning cameras ... and a flash of athleticism bursting out from a lifelong concealment. Yeah ... it could happen. I do believe it could ...

This doesn't mean there aren't all sorts of privacy implications, along with implications for security,
